Edmund Husserl said, “Anyone who seriously intends to become a philosopher must ‘once in his life’ withdraw into himself and attempt, within himself, to overthrow and build anew all the sciences that, up to then, he has been accepting. Philosophy – wisdom (sagesse) is the philosophizer’s quite personal affair.” Husserl’s insight influences the philosophy department of Kumarganj College. Philosophy can be defined as the study of self-experience The mission of the philosophy department of Kumarganj College is to analyse, explore, investigate, and enhance our knowledge of the world without any presuppositions. This does not mean that we want to deny, doubt, exclude, or reject any of our preconceived ideas about the world. Instead, we aim to re-evaluate every philosophical notion and explanation we have previously established in our thoughts. It also demands that every analysis and argument always remain open to re-examination. Our mundane attitude toward the world is sometimes dominated by naive attitudes, beliefs, prejudices, theories, aptitudes, etc.Through our own self-experience, we want to bracket our own dogmatic attitude. Philosophy can be defined as a self-justifying science. Because of this, the mission of this department is to explore self-experience and improve cognitive abilities. Our mission is to follow the self-meditative process as a means to attain novel insights into every philosophical concept, problem, and argument. This is why Saint Augustine said, “Do not wish to go out; go back into yourself. Truth dwells in the inner man.”
The visions of the department of philosophy are:
1) To provide a friendly, cordial, collaborative, and interactive relationship between teachers and students.
2) To provide an educational atmosphere in which fresh concepts, investigation, and expertise may thrive.
3) To foster the student’s capacity for critical thinking, reasoning, and analytical thinking.
4) To enhance the active participation of the students in class.
5) To explain the philosophical topics to the students, we try to provide critical investigation, analytical understanding, logical analysis, board work, examples, seminars, and webinars.
6) To develop student’ knowledge of the Indian and Western philosophical traditions.
7) To improve the cognitive skills of the students.
8) To improve students’ capacity to read and comprehend original philosophical books.
